IN THE KNICK OF TIME (Part 1)
There was a very articulate story teller
on a certain radio station in Zambia whom we loved to listen to when I was
young. Each day the programme was about to come on the air we, old and young, could
congregate around the radio to listen to this man. Everyday, he would come with
a new story. His stories were told in vernacular language common to Zambia and
Malawi. And they were extremely captivating. We loved them.
Well,
times had long gone and I moved on to other parts of Malawi where the frequency
of that radio could not be easily caught. But I could not take the story teller
and his stories off my mind.
One
day I met a Zambian in a certain educational institution. He was going to be
with us for a period of four years. Each day I saw him, by association, I
remembered the articulate Zambian radio story teller. But I thought, “…no
hurry, I will ask about him one day.” Days turned to weeks, weeks to months and
then… to years. And soon, we were in the fourth year. Towards the end of that
year, I asked the Zambian whether he knew of the radio station which featured
the story teller. He said yes. And the same day, we embarked to find it and the
story teller. This Zambian friend tuned into it and found it, and the programme
began. What happened?
Because
of limitations of space, I will finish telling this story next time. Watch the
space.
