STAYING HEALTHY- TAKING CARE OF THE GIFT OF LIFE

June 19, 2026 5:33 AM Kamuzu Academy

Dear All

We all know that plants need water to grow. If a plant is not watered, it begins to wilt, dry up, and eventually die. Water is essential for its survival. However, what happens if we give a plant too much water? Surprisingly, that is not good either. The roots may rot, the plant may become unhealthy, and its growth can be affected.

The lesson is simple: even good things must be used in the right measure. Too little can be harmful, but too much can also be harmful. Healthy growth requires balance.

Dr. Myles Munroe once said, "our bodies are gifts entrusted to us, and that we have a responsibility to take care of them". He reminded us that many people abuse their bodies not because they intend to harm themselves, but because they ignore the principles that keep the body healthy and functioning well.

As students, one of the most important principles you can learn is the importance of a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, getting sufficient sleep, exercising regularly, and avoiding habits that damage your physical and mental well-being.

Sometimes, especially during busy academic periods, students can neglect their health. Some skip meals, survive on snacks, noodles or junk foods, stay up too late, spend too much time on screens, or avoid physical activity altogether. Yet the mind learns best when the body is healthy. Academic success is not only about studying hard; it is also about taking care of the body that supports your learning.

This is one reason why sport is such an important part of life at Kamuzu Academy. Sport is not merely an extracurricular activity. It helps to keep our bodies fit, strengthens our hearts and muscles, reduces stress, improves concentration, and teaches valuable lessons about discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Every time you participate in sport, you are investing in your future health.

Today is also the last Friday of the term. As we approach the holiday, many of us are looking forward to a well-deserved break. While rest is important, let us remember that a holiday should not be a break from healthy habits. Continue to exercise, stay active, eat sensibly, and get adequate rest. Use the holiday not only to relax but also to recharge physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Remember: just as a plant flourishes when it receives the right amount of water, sunlight, and care, you too will flourish when you take proper care of your body and mind.

A reminder to all students: if your parents or guardians will not be attending the Tutor Consultation Day in person on Thursday, 25th June 2026, you must arrange and book a telephone consultation with your tutor for Friday, 26th June 2026. Please speak to your tutor as soon as possible to secure a suitable appointment time.
