A TEST OF PRAISE

Many of us fail the test of praise. When we do something praiseworthy and people duly shower praises on us, how do we react?

Each year the Headmaster appoints new prefects. These people are set apart for the task of leadership. They have shown that they are good in that area. But after being appointed, chosen as a prefect from the many, how do you react? Are you indeed chosen to lead and serve others or the intended service will simply be marred by pride? Solomon puts it more succinctly when he says “(t)he crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but man (or woman) is tested by the praise (s)he receives”.

It is maturity and wisdom when a team captain attributes his/her success to their teammates; when a prefect of a house shifts her/his praise to her/his members; when a charity club president gives the praise due to him/her to members and to all who contributed. Praise tests everyone. Whether you have passed or failed, only you can tell.
