LEADERSHIP
As we are considering choosing a new crop of prefects, it is important to reflect on what other people have said about being a leader. Some of these people quoted here will be familiar as they occupied the highest offices of countries some people look up to for sound leadership.
“A successful leader does not talk down to people. He lifts them up.” (Richard Nixon)
“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one who gets people to do the greatest things.” (Ronald Regan)
“Real leadership is leaders recognizing that they serve the people that they lead.” (Pete Hoekstra)
“Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.” (Sam Walton)
“Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because (s)he wants to do it.” (General Dwight Eisenhower)
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” (Benjamin Franklin)
“The Leader sets out for the people what they need and not simply what they want. Otherwise, the Leader is just a follower.” (Tony Blair)
For those aspiring to be prefects or to occupy any other leadership position, how do you rate yourself as you consider the quotes above? Self-reflection is part of the deal in leadership.
