BEING GRATEFUL
Good things are appreciated more when you lose them. A patient will value health. A prisoner will yearn for freedom. A place in a school is valued more when you fail to get admitted into the school. Conversely, we take for granted the things we have. When did you appreciate your ability to see things?
When you listen to a beautiful piece of music, does it occur to you how boring life could be if you were completely deaf? Jim Revees can’t be more right when he sings to thank God for nearly everything, the rivers, the fish, the birds,… And then, he thanks God “(t)hat we were born with eyes to see these things”.
The obvious little things matter, but are often ignored. When we lose them, they become big. Look around you. Have you said anything in appreciation for your mum, dad or friend? Have you appreciated that you are sleeping under a roof while some people sleep under a bridge? You have food to eat – sometimes nice food for that matter. Millions around the world sleep on an empty stomach.
Often, when a student is expelled, they try hard to plead with us to stay. Those who have not made it in the recent entrance exams are pleading for a second chance. Do you value your chance of being an Academy student while you still have it?
I find truth in words of Hannah Smith who said, “The soul that gives thanks can find comfort in everything; the soul that complains can find comfort in nothing.”
Remain blessed.
