WHEN MORE FEELS LESS
One of the most unsettling things about life is that there are certain things which when you have, you realise you don’t have. When Sarah passes the KA entrance exam, she feels she has conquered. What a nice feeling!
She comes into Form 1. She discovers a void, which makes her question if she knows anything; and she thinks, “If only I could get into Form 2, I would be alright.”
The game goes on. The higher you go, and the more you learn, the less you feel you know. You learn more and more, and yet you feel you know less and less. You eventually reach U6. You compete on the world stage, and you go to college. You gain more knowledge about fewer areas. And the feeling is that the more you know, the less you feel you know. We fight against ignorance. But the more we fight, the more we are exposed to the ignorance surrounding us. You seem to know more and more about less and less, and as someone said, until it feels you know everything about nothing.
Besides, we sometimes get it wrong in our knowledge acquisition. At some point in history, scientists thought the earth is flat. And those who first suggested that it was spherical paid the ultimate price. But when it was later confirmed that it was indeed ball-shaped, those who suggested so at that stage became heroes. When at first, we said it is flat, we thought we knew what the earth is like. Did we?
The apparent mess creates an insatiable quest to know more. It keeps us on our toes– going. It keeps us humble. It is a healthy feeling. By it, we learn more. I call upon KA family, students and staff, not to be intimidated by this feeling. It should keep our minds open and propel us into greater academic endeavours.
Have a blessed day.
